Utilities – Basic Laborer

1.  Description

  • A motivated individual interested in learning how to install utility lines. This person must have physical strength, endurance, and the aptitude to work well with their hands. They will work well in teams, follow instructions, and abide by safety guidelines.

2.  Responsibilities

  • Keep jobsite free of debris.
  • Prepare tools and work areas for skilled pipelayers to perform duties.
  • Check equipment fluids and clean windows on each machine. Clean floors of equipment with small broom and make sure trash is removed.
  • Load or unload construction materials.
  • Learn about work area set-ups such as: installation of pipes and knowing when to clean up. Help with all responsibilities of skilled pipelayers.
  • Become more productive each day. Be ahead mentally and more prepared before asked.
  • Learn on the jobsite, basic equipment operation associated with various tasks.
  • Learn and operate water trucks in a safe manner. Always knowing what is immediately around the truck to ensure that no damage happens to persons or equipment.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and notify them immediately of any safety items, damages, or problems with equipment, materials, personnel issues, jobsite challenges, etc.
  • Follow all protocols for safety and care of equipment and work area.

3.  Requirements

  • Must have valid Driver License
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Great attitude
  • Attention to detail
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Excellent time management and scheduling skills
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to learn in a high-paced work environment
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (standing for long periods of time, lifting heavy loads of up to 50 lbs., etc.)
  • Availability to work nights when requested

4.  NDX Provided Items

  • All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Hard hat, reflective work vest, gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection. Each item is replaced quarterly.
  • Large tools such as sledgehammers, pics, and digging bars.

5.  Employee Provided Items

  • Reliable transportation
  • Personal broom and shovels – shovels need to be a flat nose and a round nose
  • Personal tape measure, preferably tenths and inches (Engineers)
  • Personal hand level
  • Hammer when helping grade checker set hubs
  • Must obtain an OSHA10 certification within 15 business days of your start date

6.  Other Items to Note

  • Employee will receive a copy of the NDX Safety and Employee Manuals.
  • Employee will sign an agreement which states that you agree to and will follow all standard operating procedures outlined in the manuals.
  • Reviews will take place within the first two (2) weeks of the internship. This review will assess how well you are doing with your responsibilities.
  • You will be on a probationary period for 90 days from your date of hire.
  • Financial reviews may be requested one time in a calendar year period.
  • NDX does not support pay advances or loans of any kind.
  • This position is non-exempt from overtime pay.
